A Trace Into Family History: Between 1920s–1940s
In order to research her own family history, Yu Yen-Fang traced the experiences and jobs done by her grandfather and great-grandfather, who moved to Japan when Taiwan was a colony of the Japanese Empire and worked as personal seal makers. By vicariously experiencing her grandfather’s memories of living in Japan through her own body, she developed a plan to present history that was not previously part of any discourse as a form of tacit knowledge.

Put Me In Your Suit: Embodiment, Lifestyles Shared with Another Age, and Walking

Summary: In this talk, Yu Yen-Fang shared her ongoing project about Japan and her family history. Most of the history of her grandfather and great-grandfather, who moved to Japan during Taiwan’s time as a colony and lived and worked there, is now lost. Yu is interested not in facts and recorded history, but in the possibilities and potential that synchronize through imagination, embodiment, and empathy. As such, she shared her plan to clad herself in her grandfather’s suit and step out onto the streets of Tokyo.

Summary: Yu Yen-Fang held a choreography workshop sharing her approaches toward creating her new work, Suggestions on Vanishing III. In addition, she held a workshop on contact improvisation as an event for the general public.

■Profiles
Yu Yen-Fang studied choreography and performance at Taipei National University of the Arts in 2005. From 2001 to 2014, she was a member of Ku & Dancers. She moved to the United States in 2005 and earned an MFA in choreography from Ohio State University. In the United States, she danced as a member of the Bebe Miller Company in 2008. That same year, she began working as a solo artist, creating pieces about the everyday, memory, travel, and walking. In 2013, Yu launched the Project MuoMuo interdisciplinary collective of young artists and has collaborated with numerous dance companies and theater troupes in Taiwan. She has also participated in ADAM Artist List and Museum of Human Emotions 2021, a dance exchange project between Japan, Italy, France, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
